Messenger and WhatsApp ads vs lead forms: which suits a service business?

When a service business should use Meta ads that open a Messenger, Instagram or WhatsApp chat, when an instant form or landing page fits better, and what each needs.

The short answer

Messaging ads open a conversation with your business in Messenger, Instagram Direct or WhatsApp. They suit offers where people have questions before they commit, and they only work if someone replies quickly. Instant forms collect contact details inside Facebook or Instagram and suit simple, well-understood offers. A landing page gives you the most room for proof and detail. Pick the one your team can actually respond to, and judge it on accepted, qualified enquiries rather than conversations started.

Meta gives advertisers several ways to turn an ad into an enquiry. Our guide to instant forms vs landing pages compares two of them. This guide adds the third: ads that start a chat.

What messaging ads are

Meta’s developer documentation describes messaging ads as ads that send people who click them directly into a conversation with your business in Messenger, Instagram Direct or WhatsApp. There is also an option to send each person to whichever of those apps they are most likely to reply in. Meta also offers an automated question-and-answer flow in Messenger for qualifying leads. Which campaign objectives support which destinations has changed over time, so check Ads Manager when you set one up.

When messaging fits

  • Customers usually have a question before they commit, such as “do you service my suburb?” or “can you do it this week?”
  • Your customers already message businesses, for example on WhatsApp.
  • Someone on your team can reply within minutes during business hours, and you have an honest auto-reply for after hours.
  • You can move the conversation to a quote or booking without losing the details.

When a form or page fits better

  • Nobody can reply to chats quickly. An unanswered chat is a lead lost, and the customer saw it go unanswered.
  • You need specific details before you can quote, such as address, job type and photos, which a form collects more reliably.
  • The offer needs explaining, with examples of your work and pricing guidance. That is a landing page’s job.

Making messaging ads work

Before you switch them on
  • Decide who replies, in which app, and how quickly.
  • Write a short, truthful greeting and auto-reply. Do not pretend a person is there if they are not.
  • Prepare the two or three questions you need answered before you can quote.
  • Decide how a chat becomes a record in your inbox or CRM, so it is not lost in someone’s phone.
  • Decide what counts as a result: an accepted, qualified enquiry, not a chat started.

Our guide to reducing missed leads covers response routines, and tracking leads from click to customer covers measuring them.
