Is hipages worth it? How tradies can judge a lead platform with their own numbers

How an Australian tradie can judge whether hipages or another lead platform pays, using cost per won job, win rate and job value, and when to build your own.

The short answer

It depends on your numbers, not on reviews. Work out what you pay per job you actually win: the platform cost for a month divided by the jobs won from it. Compare that with what an average job is worth to you after costs. The same platform cost is easier to recover on larger jobs and with a higher win rate, and harder on small call-outs. Run it for a set period, track every lead to won or lost, and compare the result with what your own website, reviews and Google Ads could bring in.

How to judge a lead platform: cost per won job compared with job value and your own marketing

hipages, ServiceSeeking, Oneflare and Airtasker all connect Australian customers with tradies, in different ways. This guide does not rate any platform. It gives you a way to answer the question with your own numbers.

What hipages charges, as far as we could check

We could not read hipages’ own pricing pages. A third-party Australian price guide, What’s The Damage?, reported in October 2026 that hipages sells monthly subscription plans from about $139 to $649 a month plus GST, with credits used to accept leads, and a minimum contract term. That publisher also sells tradie leads and says it competes with hipages, so treat its figures as a starting point and confirm current pricing and terms with hipages before signing anything.

The number that decides it: cost per won job

A lead is not a job. What matters is what you pay for each job you actually win.

How to work out cost per won job. Hypothetical figures, to show the method.
StepExample
Platform cost for the month, including any lead credits$300
Leads accepted12
Quotes sent10
Jobs won2
Cost per won job$300 ÷ 2 = $150
Average value of those jobs to you after materials and labour$600
Platform cost as a share of that$150 ÷ $600 = 25%

Whether 25% is acceptable depends on your margin and what else that money could do. Our advertising break-even calculator works out the most you can afford to pay for a job from your own job value, costs and close rate. Use the same ceiling for any platform or advertising channel.

What moves the answer

  • Job size. The same lead cost is a small share of a renovation and a large share of a small call-out.
  • Win rate. Winning one in three quotes rather than one in six halves your cost per won job. Speed of reply and the quality of your quote both affect it.
  • How many others are quoting. If several tradies receive the same lead, your chance of winning it falls.
  • Contract terms. A minimum term or automatic renewal changes how quickly you can stop if it does not pay. Read the terms before you sign.

Run it as a test, not a habit

A fair trial
  • Set a period and a budget before you start, within the contract terms.
  • Record every lead: date, job type, suburb, quoted, won or lost, job value.
  • Reply quickly and quote properly, so the test measures the platform, not your response time.
  • At the end, work out cost per won job and compare it with your break-even ceiling.
  • Check the jobs themselves: are they the work you want, in the areas you want?

The alternative: leads that come to you

Platforms rent you access to customers. Your own marketing builds something you keep: a Business Profile with genuine reviews, service pages that are found in search, and, if the numbers work, Google Ads you control. These take longer to build and need effort, but the enquiries come to you rather than to several tradies at once. You can use both while you build your own, and compare them on the same cost per won job.

Our guides to SEO for tradies, Google Ads for tradies and asking for Google reviews cover each one.
