What Sydney customers search for before they book an event: 2026 demand data
Monthly Google search demand for party hire, marquees, photo booths, wedding planners, stylists and luxury picnics, with seasonality and what it means for event businesses.
Equipment and entertainment hire attract the biggest search demand. “Party hire”, “marquee hire” and “photo booth hire” each average about 4,400 Google searches a month in Australia. Style-led services are searched far less: “wedding stylist sydney” averages 210 and “luxury picnic sydney” 50. Demand is seasonal. Sydney wedding-planner searches peak in January, and nearly every hire search bottoms out in December.

We pulled this data to answer a question event businesses ask us constantly: is Google actually worth the effort for what we do? The honest answer depends on what you sell. Here are the numbers, then what they mean.
The numbers
Two things stand out. First, people search for the thing or the occasion far more than for the service category. Hundreds of people a month search for chairs, marquees and photo booths in Sydney. Very few type “event stylist”. Second, local intent is strong. “Party hire near me” alone averages about 1,000 searches a month, and “marquee hire near me” and “event hire near me” about 390 each.
What it means if you sell hire equipment
Hire is a genuine search market. Customers type specific items, compare a few websites and enquire. That rewards hire businesses whose websites have a crawlable page per product category, with sizes, quantities, prices and delivery areas in plain text, plus a complete Google Business Profile for the “near me” searches.
Price questions are real too. “Photo booth hire cost” averages about 170 searches a month and “marquee hire cost” about 140. If your site answers them honestly, it can win the customer who is still comparing. We cover how in should event businesses show prices.
What it means if you sell style
If you’re a stylist, planner or luxury picnic business, Google is unlikely to be your biggest discovery channel. Referrals, venues, Instagram and wedding directories usually do more of the introducing. That doesn’t make your website less important. It changes its job. Most of your visitors arrive already interested, from a referral or a post, and the site’s task is to prove you’re right for them and make enquiring easy.
There are still useful search niches. “Proposal ideas sydney” averages about 110 searches a month, “backdrop hire sydney” about 90 and “balloon arch sydney” about 90. These are small, but they come from people with a specific plan, which is often worth more than a big generic term.
When people search
The pattern is consistent across categories. Wedding planning searches climb from October and peak in January, after the Christmas and New Year engagement season. Picnic hire follows summer. Party, marquee and chair hire in Sydney dip sharply in December, when most summer events are already booked, and rise again into autumn. In this data, May was the strongest or joint-strongest month for “party hire sydney”, “marquee hire sydney” and “chair hire sydney”.
The marriage data points the same way. The Australian Bureau of Statistics recorded 118,804 marriages in Australia in 2025, including 39,818 registered in New South Wales. It reports more weddings in spring and autumn and fewer in winter and around Easter and Christmas. The single most popular wedding date in 2025 was 25 October.
What to do with this
- Hire businesses: make sure each product category has its own page that Google can read, and get your Google Business Profile complete before spring.
- Wedding businesses: have your website, portfolio and enquiry form ready before the January surge, not during it. Our wedding enquiry plan works backwards from that peak.
- Everyone: run paid campaigns ahead of demand, not after it. A campaign that starts in December for summer is already late.
- Measure against the season. Compare January with last January, not with December.
Method and limitations
Search volumes come from DataForSEO keyword data, retrieved through OpenSEO on 25 October 2026 for Google searches in Australia. They are monthly averages based on Google Ads data, and Google reports them in rounded bands, so 880 and 1,000 are approximate levels, not exact counts. Phrases containing “sydney” count searches made anywhere in Australia. Monthly figures cover September or October 2025 to August or September 2026.
This data doesn’t include searches on Instagram, TikTok, Pinterest or inside Google Maps that don’t match these phrases, and it says nothing about clicks or bookings. Treat it as relative demand: which categories are searched more than others, and when.
