Does a luxury picnic business need a website, or is Instagram enough?

Instagram is great for discovery and weak for bookings. What Google actually shows for Sydney picnic searches, when Instagram-only is fine, and the smallest website worth building.

The short answer

Instagram is often where picnic customers discover you, but it’s a weak place to close a booking and an unreliable way to be found on Google. If you take more than a handful of bookings a month, a simple website with packages, total prices, locations and a way to book or enquire will usually save you hours of DMs and give Google something to show. If you’re a side business booked out by referrals, Instagram alone can be enough for now.

What Google shows for Sydney picnic searches

We checked Google’s Australian results for “luxury picnic sydney” on 25 October 2026. The page was led by business websites and a map pack of local picnic companies with their Google Business Profiles. One Instagram profile appeared in the organic top ten, in fourth place. So Instagram can be found on Google, but most of the first page went to businesses with their own websites.

The search demand is modest: about 50 searches a month for “luxury picnic sydney” and about 210 for “picnic hire” across Australia, peaking in January. Google probably won’t be your biggest source of customers. But someone typing those words is close to booking, and it costs little to be there when they do.

What Instagram does well, and where it falls down

Instagram versus a website for a picnic business

The real cost of running bookings through DMs is time and leakage. Messages get buried, people ask the same five questions, availability lives in your head, and deposits mean chasing bank transfers. None of that shows up as a number, which is why it’s easy to underestimate.

When Instagram alone is fine

  • You’re testing the idea and doing a few picnics a month.
  • You’re consistently booked out through referrals and repeat customers.
  • You genuinely don’t want more bookings right now.

Even then, set up a free Google Business Profile. Picnic businesses that don’t serve customers at a shopfront can hide their address and list up to 20 service areas, and Google suggests keeping the area within about two hours’ drive of your base.

The smallest picnic website worth building

A picnic website that does its job
  • A homepage that says what you do and where: “Luxury picnics and proposal setups across Sydney”.
  • One section or page per package, with the total price, guest numbers, duration and exactly what’s included.
  • Locations you set up at, and who arranges any permits a location needs.
  • Your weather plan, set-up and pack-down times, and deposit and cancellation terms.
  • A way to check a date and book, or a short enquiry form if every picnic is custom.
  • A gallery of real setups, linked to your Instagram rather than replacing it.
  • Reviews from real customers, with permission.

Standard packages are good candidates for instant booking with a deposit, while proposals and corporate events usually need a conversation. That trade-off is covered in online booking or quote requests.

Make Instagram and the website work together

Your Instagram bio link should go to the page most visitors want: packages and booking, not a homepage slideshow. Highlights can mirror your packages, each ending with “book on our website”. When someone DMs “how much?”, reply with the price and a direct link to that package. The website does the explaining, and you get your evenings back.
