Technical SEO for Small Businesses: The Practical Checklist
A practical technical SEO checklist covering crawlability, indexation, metadata, internal links, performance and common mistakes.

Start with crawlability and indexation
Search engines need to be able to fetch important resources and discover the pages you actually want indexed. Check robots directives, XML sitemaps, canonical URLs, HTTP status codes and internal links before investing heavily in new content.
Private dashboards, APIs, checkout flows and other utility routes generally do not belong in an organic search index.
Make every important page understandable
Each indexable page should have a clear title, useful description, one primary heading and a logical heading hierarchy. The copy should explain the page’s purpose in normal language. Metadata should support the page rather than promise something the content does not deliver.
Check internal links
Internal links help people move from questions to answers and from answers to relevant commercial pages. Review orphan pages and important pages with few contextual links. Use descriptive anchor text and link where it genuinely helps the reader.
Performance is part of the experience
Reduce unnecessary JavaScript, third-party work and oversized media without sacrificing lead-generation functionality. Test real pages on mobile as well as desktop. Performance work should focus on user experience and Core Web Vitals rather than a single synthetic score.
A repeatable technical review
Run a crawl or route inventory periodically. Record broken links, accidental noindex directives, duplicate metadata, missing alt text, slow templates and pages that have become difficult to discover. Fix high-impact issues first, then keep the system healthy as the site grows.
